The <\/u><\/strong>Shimon Greenhouse<\/u><\/strong>\u2019s story<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

A working team of our site met with Shimon Greenhouse and his wife at their pleasant apartment on Bilu Street, right in the center of Petah Tikva. It was in the end of June 2017, so some months have been passed, but I still can\u2019t calm down from his stories. Shimon talked with a peaceful ton about the horrors of the war and how he was saved from death dozens of times.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Here is the street, here’s the house…<\/i><\/p>\n

It is so wonderful, to realize that these zigzags are shaping our lives. A kid, who came out among the dead bodies, who almost died of cold, later from gangrene\u2026 has invested so much in his education and recovered with steadiness, that 18 years after he immigrated to Israel, he will be appointed as the director of one of the top high schools in this country.\u00a0 And how much fun Shimon has over his life companion, his wife Lisa (Aliza), who was born in Lithuania.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

They celebrated their golden wedding a long time ago. They have three children \u2013 the boys Tal and Nir, and their daughter Nurit, and seven grandchildren. Everyone, judging by the stories and the pictures, got along fine. Another son, Gil, passed away at an early age, and in his memory the Greenhouses opened a fund and donated to needy people. At the Amal high school he is also successful, despite the fact that in 20 years he was running the school, Shimon had different incidents (the parents filed three cases with him for court cases because of some cases with the teachers, but everything ended to everyone’s satisfaction, unless he has not have been awarded a prize in 2017, a figurine from the President of the State of Israel).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

At the beginning of this century, a documentary film “Sioma, A Visit to Belarus” was prepared for Shimon Greenhouse. The film was filmed in Israel, then in Krasnaye, Maladziechna district (in Belarus), as well as in those places around Vilejka, where our hero’s partisan battalion was fighting. At the end of the filming, it was necessary to show the rough material to the Belarusian authorities \u2013 happily, they had no complaints. The book about Mr. Greenhouse under the title “Teacher for Life” was published in Israel 8 years ago in a limited edition. The book was published again in 2012 from which we took some of the pictures for this article.<\/p>\n

In the middle and late 1940s, Shimon studied at a Belarusian school, where the Russian language was taught only as a profession, the Israeli teacher until then reading only in Belarusian, he understands some of the works of Yakub Kolas and Yanka Kupala, In contrast of most of the veterans, he speaks Russian almost with no accent.<\/p>\n

My first name is Shimon. At birth I was listed as Shmaryahu, but in Russia and Belarus, I was called Semyon. My father\u2019s first name is Yekutiel, the Russian version of that name is Kushel, so I was called Semyon Kushelevich with my patronymic.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I was born in 1930 (although the birth certificate was recorded in 1932) in the town of Krasnaye, by that time it belonged to Poland. There were many Jews in the area, and among them were very rich. They had shops, ateliers and factories that served tens of thousands of people. We were not the richest and the best, but our lives were not bad.<\/p>\n

Our house was in the downtown, and we had lots of land, buildings, various estates. There was a large cellar, where in the winter they brought a shower of ice, and there, like in the refrigerator, they stored products all year long. My father, a former officer of the Polish army, had a large liquor store, but since there was anti-Semitism in Poland, he was not officially allowed to do business, and the store was registered by a Polish officer, his friend. In addition, my father bought many acres of wood that stood in the swamps, and in the winter, at my father’s command, men used to cut these trees, and then they took them to Western Europe by train.<\/p>\n

Father was quite religious. He had people who brought a lot of crawfish from swamps and rivers, and I still remember how to catch them so they would not bite. The animals were folded into boxes with moss and transported in thousands and tens of thousands to Western Europe (usually to Germany and France). There were regular crawfish \u2013 brown \u2013 and there were also blue ones, considered aristocrats among crawfish.<\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Shimon Greenhouse’s parents<\/i><\/p>\n

My mother’s name was Rosa. I had a big brother and sister, they were called Mendel and Henia. They were members of Jewish youth organizations. Several activists intended to immigrate to Israel. I remember my father always laughing and saying to them: “Where do you want to go, to these swamps, to the sand. Here in Poland we have a good life.”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

His mother’s relatives<\/i><\/p>\n

In our house we kept kosher, on everything in our house we had to read a prayer. “You have chosen us from all the nations, Sh\u2019ma Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Ehad.” And we felt safe, life was good. We had a governess, a cook and a lot of people. But in the mid-1930s (35 or 36) Rydz-Smigly became prime minister of Poland instead of Pilsudski. Rydz-Smigly was a man prone to anti-Semitic views, and we already felt the influence of Germany, in which Hitler came to power. And in Poland they began to throw stones at the windows of Jewish shops and to hang signs “Do not buy from the Jews.” The state stopped inviting Jews, life changed completely, it got much worse. I remember the most important thing that worried my father: my brother and sister had to start studying at the university, where they almost stopped accepting Jews. The university authorities asked “insolent”, harder questions during the exams. And those who, after all, were admitted to the university, had to sit behind special partitions.<\/p>\n

In 1939, after the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, the Soviet Union and Germany divided Poland. The Soviet Union came to us, and most people took it very well. Indeed, large firms were confiscated by the state, but my father was given some role… Young people saw many opportunities in the Soviet Union. And I remember that my brother was in the aviation circle, did some project designing the wing of the airplane, and sent this project to the Bauman Institute in Moscow. They accepted it very well and invited him to study. But he didn\u2019t make it, on June 22, 1941, Germany attacked us.<\/p>\n

I also remember that my brother was a “leftist” and my sister \u2013 “rightist” \u2013 belonged to Betar, and Betar wore black shirts with gold buttons, a little similar to those of the Gestapo. And my brother, though he loved my sister, got up at night to cut the buttons. In the morning my father had to make peace between them.<\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

In the summer of 1941, tens of thousands or perhaps hundreds of thousands of Russian soldiers were captured. The Red Army lost all coordination, and two days later the German army conquered our town. Sorry to say, but I saw that some rich Jews wore ties, special festive clothes and went out to receive the German army. Probably they remembered the Germany of World War I, where the front passed by us. They remembered that the Germans were civilized people, and that they had a contract with them, and the Jews traded with them. At that time, the Jews sold goods to the Russian army and to the German army, and some of them became very rich.<\/p>\n

But in 1941, two days later, everything changed. There were decrees, commands – “this is forbidden, and that is forbidden,” and one punishment for all violations was death. Jews could not walk on pavements, were not allowed to walk individually but in groups, because the Jews were not considered human beings in the eyes of the Nazis, we were like animals that lead to diseases and infections only.<\/p>\n

In Krasnaye there was a military campus, remained from the Polish army, and the Germans made a large base there, from which they were given arms and uniforms to the front with Russia. They needed labor, so they took us to work. I was 11 years old, but they took me. Each of us received a piece of paper, a \u201clife certificate\u201d. They say that if we work, the Germans need us, so they will keep us alive. And we went to work in the morning on a large group on the highway under the escort of German policemen, they beat us. And we had such a blacksmith, a big strong man, and everyone was afraid of him. He did not understand how he was not allowed to go where he wanted to, and stubbornly walked along the sidewalk. At first even the Germans were afraid of him, but after a few days they stopped us. They stopped him \u2013 ten policemen, including local people… and they began to shoot him \u2013 in the legs, in the body \u2013 until they killed him. He was the first victim in our town.<\/p>\n

In general, the life of Jews was hung by a thread. Shooting and killing became a daily occurrence. I remember that the Jews went to pray in the morning in prayer shawls, and the Germans arrested them. They ordered them to kneel and said, “Pray to God and ask forgiveness for the crimes you have committed against the German people.” One German, wearing white gloves, took out the gun and killed a Jew. But the blood of the murdered man splashed on the murderer’s boots, he got very angry and killed them all.<\/p>\n

We were told that there was a police building and there was a large hall. On the wall, police officers wrote “V” every time they killed a Jew. Soon there was no place to write on the wall. They kept celebrating, drinking vodka, smoking their cigars, eating hot dogs. We were told that there was a policeman there, who would get up in the morning and go into this room and say, “I’m hungry, today I have not killed a Jew yet.”<\/p>\n

After a while we were taken to the square and divided into two groups. So the Germans in their own way solved the problem, who was “leftist” and who was “rightist”. One group had more healthy men and women, and the other \u2013 patients, children, who looked completely unhealthy, old people… I went to this group with Grandma Alta. Granny realized that something bad was coming, and pushed me into another group, young and healthy. I did not see my grandmother and my friends anymore… Some people told us later that the victims were all taken to the forest, and there was a big pit, a long canal. They did not even shoot them, just covered them with sand. The earth breathed for many hours, until everyone died. It was around August-September 1941.<\/p>\n

The fall began and we were transferred to the ghetto. The guards were with the dogs, with weapons in their hands, beating the Jews. We sat in one area by the river, where 20-30 houses were located. Each house had a “living room,” divided into four parts, each with a family. Without toilets, water… diseases started to spread, especially typhus. The patients’ temperature reached 42 and 43 degrees, half of them died. Many victims just covered the streets of the ghetto. There were groups of Jews who gathered the bodies and drove them to the cemetery. We could not ask for medicine. If the Germans knew, they would immediately destroy the ghetto.<\/p>\n

The ghetto was fenced, but sometimes it was possible to leave. But if a Jew was caught without a badge, death awaited him. I do not remember exactly what we wore, a strip or a star (looks, after all, a star), but every Jew had to go with a badge.<\/p>\n

They chose the Judenrat, and it was headed by a very intelligent man. Every week they had to make a contribution, they collected valuable things and handed them over to the Germans for the “crimes” committed by the Jewish people against the German people. And for one week, the head of the Judenrat could not collect the donations. The Germans \u2013 officers, in white gloves, with pistols in their hands \u2013 broke into the ghetto, gathered us and demanded that he give a list of ten people to shot them. The head of the Judenrat refused to give them the list. He knelt and an officer in white gloves shot him from behind… The head was Shabtai Arliuk, a watchmaker.<\/p>\n

There was also a Jewish police force in the ghetto, at first there were more or less decent people. But when the Nazis shot at Arlyuk they pointed to ten people – and they too were shot. All in the back of the neck… Also in white gloves and pistols. And they left. And we left too. A group of Jews who accompanied the deceased took them to the cemetery and buried them. After a while, in one barn, once owned by Jews (not in the ghetto), where German horses stood, one horse fell into a pit and broke his legs. The Germans accused the Jews that it was because of them. They broke into the ghetto again, gathered people, and my father and uncle were there. The Germans pointed at ten people, and they took ten steps forward, and again shot them all. It was winter, February 1942, freezing cold of 30 degrees. My father, when he fell, pulled me, and I fell too. He laid above me, his blood streaming down me. I thought I had already been killed; I just wondered where I was in heaven or hell and lost consciousness.<\/p>\n

When the Germans left, a group of Jews from the funeral group put the bodies on the sled and led us to the cemetery. I must have regained consciousness and moved my legs. This Jew, who took the sled, saw me and took me out of there. So I was alive again, otherwise I would have been buried.<\/p>\n

I returned to the ghetto. I lived with my mother, brother and sister. There were no food products. Mother took me, we left the ghetto, although it was dangerous. We went to our neighbor, who was fondly remembered, to ask for food. She gave, but at the same time a German officer entered the courtyard. He saw us, pinned us to the wall, took out a pistol \u2013 I still see the gun to this day, because it was directed at my forehead \u2013 and wanted to shoot. And this woman ran home, brought him a lot of sausages and vodka. She fell to her knees, kissed his shoes, asked to let us go \u2013 she did not want Jewish blood on her wall and in the yard. And he beat us \u2013 very hard \u2013 and ordered us to return to the ghetto. So we stayed alive again.<\/p>\n
